How do I dispose of medical equipment in the UK?
Use a licensed waste carrier that can send the equipment to a licensed recycling facility. Electronic medical devices are WEEE and cannot go to landfill, and some are hazardous waste. National Recycling classifies your equipment, collects it, arranges recycling or disposal and gives you the paperwork you need for your records.
Is medical equipment classed as hazardous waste?
Some of it is. Devices containing mercury, lead or certain batteries can be hazardous waste, while others are standard WEEE. We identify the correct classification for each item and supply hazardous waste consignment notes where they are required, so your records show the equipment was handled correctly.
Who do you collect medical devices from?
We collect from hospitals, GP surgeries, dental practices, laboratories, clinics and other healthcare organisations across the UK. Our services are for businesses and organisations, not households. We handle small clear-outs as well as large volumes from equipment upgrades, and can collect from multiple sites.
What happens to patient data on old devices?
Your organisation must keep personal data secure when disposing of it, under UK GDPR. Tell us which devices hold patient data when you request a quote, and we can include secure hard drive destruction and confidential waste destruction in the same collection, so data-bearing items are dealt with properly.
Can you set up regular collections?
Yes. If your site produces medical equipment waste on an ongoing basis, we can arrange regular collections as well as one-off clear-outs. Tell us how often you expect to need a collection and roughly how much equipment you have, and we will quote to suit.
Will I get paperwork for my medical equipment disposal?
Yes. You receive waste transfer notes for every collection, and hazardous waste consignment notes where needed. Keep waste transfer notes for 2 years and consignment notes for 3 years, so you can show you met your duty of care if you are ever asked.
