Why NiMH Battery Recycling Matters

NiMH batteries contain nickel and other metals that can be recovered and used again. Sending them to landfill wastes those materials, and used batteries in general waste can short-circuit if their terminals touch.

Your business has a duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. That means passing waste only to authorised carriers and keeping waste transfer notes for 2 years. The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 also set rules for how waste batteries are collected and recycled.

NiMH Battery Recycling FAQs

Ask our team
Can NiMH batteries be recycled?

Yes. NiMH batteries can be recycled at a licensed recycling facility, where nickel and other metals are recovered for reuse. Businesses should keep them out of general waste and arrange collection through a licensed waste carrier. National Recycling collects NiMH batteries from businesses across the UK.

How do I dispose of NiMH batteries?

Store used NiMH batteries in a dedicated battery container, with the terminals taped if they are loose, then arrange collection through a licensed battery recycling service. Tell us the quantity and your postcode and our team will reply with a quote.

Are NiMH batteries hazardous?

NiMH batteries are less hazardous than NiCd batteries because they contain no cadmium. They still contain metals and chemicals that should not go to landfill, and loose batteries can short-circuit if their terminals touch. Store them carefully and recycle them through a licensed service.

Can you collect NiMH batteries with other battery types?

Yes. We collect lithium, lead acid, NiMH, alkaline and other battery types, so you can arrange one collection for mixed batteries. Tell us what you have when you request a quote and we will advise on how to separate and pack them.

Will we get paperwork for the collection?

Yes. You receive a waste transfer note for each collection, which shows your business met its duty of care. Keep waste transfer notes for at least 2 years, and keep any hazardous waste consignment notes for 3 years. We send your paperwork after every collection.
