Why Fridge Freezer Disposal Needs a Specialist
Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases, either ozone-depleting substances or fluorinated gases (F-gases). These must be recovered by a specialist before the appliance is recycled, because they harm the environment if released.
Fridges are also electrical waste under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013, so they must go to a licensed recycling facility. They cannot go in a skip or general waste.
Your duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 means using authorised carriers and keeping waste transfer notes for 2 years. Hazardous waste consignment notes must be kept for 3 years in England and Wales.

No. Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases and are electrical waste, so they must be collected separately and recycled or disposed of at a licensed recycling facility. Putting them in a skip or general waste breaks your duty of care and risks the gases escaping.

No. Our fridge recycling collection service is for businesses, schools and other organisations. For a household fridge or freezer, please contact your local council or ask the retailer supplying your new appliance whether it will take the old one away.
