Why LED Light Recycling Matters
LED lights, lamps and light fittings are electrical equipment covered by the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013. They should be kept out of general waste and skips, collected separately and recycled at a licensed recycling facility.
Fluorescent tubes and lamps contain mercury and are classed as hazardous waste. In England and Wales, you must keep the hazardous waste consignment notes for 3 years.
Your duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 also applies. Pass waste only to authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for 2 years.

Can LED lights be recycled?
Yes. LED lights are electrical equipment, so they can be recycled under the WEEE Regulations. The glass, metals, plastics and electronic components inside are separated and recovered. Businesses should keep old LED lamps apart from general waste and use a licensed carrier, which we arrange for you as part of every collection.
How do I dispose of LED lights from my business?
Store old LED lamps and tubes separately, ideally in their original boxes or a sturdy container so they do not break. Then send us the lamp types and a rough quantity through our quote form. We reply and arrange collection by a licensed carrier, with waste transfer notes for your records.
What is the difference between lamp recycling and fluorescent tube disposal?
Lamp recycling covers all types of business lighting, including LED lamps, tubes and panels. Fluorescent tubes contain mercury, so they are classed as hazardous waste and need extra paperwork. We collect both, and our fluorescent tube disposal service explains the rules for tubes in more detail.
Can I put LED bulbs in the general waste?
No. LED bulbs are covered by the WEEE Regulations, so businesses should keep them out of general waste and skips. They need to be stored separately and recycled at a licensed recycling facility. Binning them can also mean you have not met your duty of care for the waste you produce.
Do you collect lighting from refurbishment projects?
Yes. Lighting upgrades and office refurbishments often produce a large number of old lamps and panels at once. We collect from offices, warehouses, retail units, schools and other commercial sites across the UK. Tell us the quantity and timing, and we will arrange a collection that fits your project.
Do you collect light bulbs from households?
No. Our lighting recycling service is for businesses and other organisations, such as schools, councils and charities. If you have a few bulbs from home, your local council's household recycling centre can usually accept them. Check your council's website for the lamp types it takes.
