Smoke Detector Disposal: What You Need to Know
There are two main types of smoke detector. Ionisation detectors contain a small radioactive source, while optical detectors do not. Check the label on the back of each unit, keep the two types apart if you can, and tell us how many of each you have.
Most detectors also contain batteries, which are sometimes sealed in. Do not put smoke detectors in general waste. Store them in a box until collection.

How do I dispose of smoke detectors from my business?
Keep old smoke detectors out of general waste and store them together in a box. Check the label on each unit to see whether it is an ionisation or optical type. Then send us the quantities through our quote form, and our team will reply with a quote to arrange a collection.
Are smoke detectors radioactive?
Ionisation smoke detectors contain a small radioactive source, which is why they need careful handling when you dispose of them. Optical smoke detectors do not contain a radioactive source. The type is usually printed on the label on the back of the detector, so check before you book a collection.
Can CCTV equipment be recycled?
Yes. CCTV cameras, recorders and monitors are electrical equipment, so they can be recycled under the WEEE Regulations. Recorders often contain hard drives with footage, which is personal data. Wipe or remove the drives before collection, or ask us about secure hard drive destruction.
What counts as monitoring and control equipment?
Monitoring and control instruments are one of the categories of electrical equipment under the WEEE Regulations. They include smoke detectors, thermostats, heating controls, security and alarm equipment, CCTV, and test and measuring instruments used in labs, workshops and buildings. Tell us what you have and we will confirm what we can collect.
Should I remove the batteries from smoke alarms before collection?
Remove batteries where they are designed to be taken out, and store them separately with the terminals taped. Some smoke alarms have sealed batteries that cannot be removed, so leave those in place. Tell us about any sealed units when you request a quote so we can plan the collection.
