Printer and Photocopier Disposal Regulations
Printers and photocopiers are electrical equipment, so when you throw them away they become WEEE. Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013, they must go to a licensed recycling facility. They cannot go in a general waste skip.
Your business also has a duty of care under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. You must use authorised waste carriers and keep waste transfer notes for 2 years.
Many modern copiers and MFPs store scanned and printed documents on an internal hard drive. Under UK GDPR, you must keep personal data secure, including when the machine leaves your building.

How do I dispose of an old office printer?
Pass it to a licensed waste carrier that will take it to a licensed recycling facility. Printers are WEEE, so they cannot go in general waste. National Recycling collects business printers across the UK, recycles the materials inside them and gives you a waste transfer note for your records.
Can photocopiers be recycled?
Yes. Photocopiers contain metals, plastics and circuit boards that can be recovered. We collect office and commercial copiers, have them dismantled at a licensed facility and recycle the materials, while any hazardous parts such as toner cartridges are disposed of safely.
Do photocopiers and printers store data?
Many do. Multifunction printers and copiers often have an internal hard drive or memory that keeps copies of scanned and printed documents. When you use our printer disposal service, data on hard drives or memory is securely destroyed before the machine is recycled.
Can I put a printer in a skip or general waste bin?
No. Printers and photocopiers are electrical waste, and the WEEE Regulations require them to go to a licensed recycling facility. Putting them in general waste could breach your duty of care. Use a licensed carrier and keep the waste transfer note.
Is there a minimum number of printers you will collect?
We collect from small businesses and large organisations alike. Tell us how many machines you have and where they are, and we will tell you what is possible and send a quote. You can add other office electronics to the same collection.
Do you collect printers from schools and public sector sites?
Yes. Our services are for businesses and other organisations, including schools, councils, offices and public sector sites. We do not collect from households. For a home printer, contact your local council or household recycling centre, which can usually accept small electrical items.
