Protecting the Data on Old Computers
Old computers and laptops often still hold customer, staff and financial records. UK GDPR requires your organisation to keep personal data secure, including when you dispose of the equipment it is stored on.
We securely erase or destroy sensitive data as part of every computer disposal. If you want drives physically destroyed, see our hard drive destruction service.

How do businesses dispose of old computers?
Businesses must send old computers to a licensed recycling facility through an authorised waste carrier, and keep waste transfer notes. Any personal data must be securely erased or destroyed first. We handle the collection, the data and the recycling, and reply to quote requests.
Is it illegal to put old computers in the general waste bin?
Computers, laptops and servers are electrical waste, so they are covered by the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013. They must go to a licensed recycling facility, not general waste or landfill.
Your business also has a duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. You must use authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for 2 years. Laptop batteries are lithium, so they need careful storage and transport to avoid fires.
Can you collect laptops in bulk?
Yes. We collect laptops, desktops and servers in large volumes, so we suit office moves, school refresh projects and company-wide upgrades. Tell us roughly how many items you have and where they are, and we will quote for a collection that fits your timetable.
What happens to the data on our computers?
Sensitive data is securely erased or destroyed before equipment is recycled, and servers are securely wiped. Where required, you receive a certificate of destruction to keep with your data protection records. For physical destruction of drives, we also offer a dedicated hard drive destruction service.
What is IT asset disposal?
IT asset disposal is the process of retiring business IT equipment safely. It covers collecting computers, laptops and servers, dealing with the data on them, and recycling them under the WEEE Regulations with the right paperwork. It helps you meet both your data protection and waste duties. See our IT asset disposal service for full details.
Is computer recycling free for businesses?
We quote each collection individually, because the price depends on the type and amount of equipment and your location. Send us the details and a photo through our quote form and our team will reply with a no-obligation quote.
Do you collect IT equipment from schools?
Yes. We collect computers, laptops and other IT equipment from schools as well as businesses across the UK, including large loads at the end of a refresh cycle. We do not collect from households, so home users should contact their local council.
