Disposal of IT Equipment: What the Law Requires

Old IT equipment is electrical waste under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013. It cannot go in general waste and must be recycled at a licensed recycling facility.

Under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, your business has a duty of care for its waste. You must pass it only to authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for 2 years.

Data matters too. UK GDPR requires you to keep personal data secure, including when you dispose of the devices it is stored on. A laptop or server sold on, lost or dumped with data still on it is a data breach waiting to happen.

IT Asset Disposal FAQs

Ask our team
What is IT asset disposal?

IT asset disposal is the secure, compliant removal of old IT equipment such as computers, laptops, servers and monitors. It covers collection, dealing with any data stored on the devices, and recycling the equipment under the WEEE Regulations. National Recycling provides this service for businesses and schools across the UK.

What does ITAD stand for?

ITAD stands for IT asset disposition, often called IT asset disposal in the UK. It describes how an organisation retires its IT equipment safely: collecting it, protecting or destroying the data on it, and recycling what is left. Good ITAD gives you paperwork showing each step was handled legally.

How should a business dispose of old IT equipment?

Use a licensed waste carrier that recycles IT equipment under the WEEE Regulations and deals with the data first. Do not put IT equipment in general waste or pass it to unlicensed collectors. Keep the waste transfer notes for 2 years, and ask for a certificate of destruction for data-bearing devices.

What happens to the data on our devices?

Data-bearing equipment goes through secure data erasure or physical destruction, such as shredding, degaussing or pulverising, before the materials are recycled. Where you need proof, we provide a certificate of destruction. This helps you show you kept personal data secure under UK GDPR when you disposed of the devices.

How much does IT asset disposal cost?

The price depends on the type of equipment, the quantity, whether the data needs destroying and where you are in the UK. Send us the details through our quote form, with a photo or asset list if you have one, and our team will reply with a quote.

Do you collect IT equipment across the UK?

Yes. We collect IT equipment from businesses and schools nationwide through our network of haulage partners. Our head office is in Northampton and our depot is in Burscough, Lancashire, and we can arrange one-off or scheduled collections for single sites and multi-site organisations.
