Why Server Recycling Needs a Specialist

Servers hold your most sensitive data. Customer records, emails, finance systems and backups often sit on the same drives. UK GDPR requires you to keep personal data secure, including when you dispose of the hardware.

It is all WEEE. Servers, switches and routers are electrical waste under the WEEE Regulations 2013. They cannot go in general waste or a skip and must be recycled at a licensed recycling facility.

You have a duty of care. Under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, you must use authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for 2 years.

Server Recycling FAQs

Ask our team
How do you dispose of old servers?

Old servers should be collected by a licensed waste carrier, have their data securely wiped or their drives destroyed, and then be recycled under the WEEE Regulations. National Recycling handles each step for businesses across the UK, and provides waste transfer notes and, where required, a certificate of destruction.

Can servers be recycled?

Yes. Servers are recycled at licensed recycling facilities, where the metal casings, circuit boards, cables and other components are separated and recovered. Anything that cannot be recycled is disposed of safely. The data must be dealt with first, so choose a service that wipes or destroys the drives.

What happens to the data on our servers?

Servers are securely wiped, or their hard drives are destroyed by shredding, degaussing or pulverising. Where you need proof, we provide a certificate of destruction for your records. This helps you show you met your UK GDPR obligations when the hardware left your business.

Do you recycle network equipment such as switches and routers?

Yes. Switches, routers and similar networking hardware are WEEE and can be recycled alongside your servers in the same collection. Tell us roughly how many items you have when you request a quote, and include a photo if you can, so we can plan the collection.

Is there a minimum quantity for server disposal?

We collect from a single comms cupboard up to large server rooms. Tell us what you have, including the number of servers and any networking hardware, and our team will reply with a quote and the options for your site.

Do you collect servers anywhere in the UK?

Yes. We collect servers and network equipment from businesses nationwide through our network of haulage partners. Our head office is in Northampton and our depot is in Burscough, Lancashire, and we can collect from a single office or from multiple sites in one plan.
