Why Data Centre Decommissioning Needs Care
Data risk. A data centre often holds most of a business's data, on hundreds of drives. UK GDPR requires you to keep personal data secure, including when you dispose of the hardware it sits on.
WEEE rules. Servers, switches and IT equipment are electrical waste under the WEEE Regulations 2013 and must be recycled at a licensed recycling facility.
Duty of care. Under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, you must use authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for 2 years.

What is data centre decommissioning?
Data centre decommissioning, also written data center decommissioning, is the process of shutting down a data centre or server room and removing its equipment. It covers collecting servers, network hardware and storage, destroying the data securely, and recycling the equipment compliantly, with paperwork to prove each step.
How do you decommission a data centre?
Start with an inventory of everything that is leaving and migrate any data you need. Then arrange a licensed carrier to collect the equipment, make sure data-bearing devices are securely wiped or destroyed, and have everything recycled under the WEEE Regulations. Keep the waste transfer notes and certificates of destruction.
What happens to the data on decommissioned equipment?
Servers and other data-bearing equipment are securely wiped, or their drives are destroyed by shredding, degaussing or pulverising. Where you need proof, we provide a certificate of destruction. This helps you show you kept personal data secure under UK GDPR when the hardware left your control.
Can decommissioned servers be recycled?
Yes. Once the data has been dealt with, servers and network equipment are recycled at licensed recycling facilities, where metals, circuit boards and other components are recovered. Anything that cannot be recycled is disposed of safely, and you receive waste transfer notes for the collection.
Can you collect in stages?
Yes. Many decommissioning projects run in phases so that systems stay live until they are migrated. Tell us your timeline when you request a quote and we will agree collection dates that fit your plan, whether that is a single clearance or a series of collections.
Do you cover data centres across the UK?
Yes. We collect from data centres and server rooms nationwide through our network of haulage partners. Our head office is in Northampton and our depot is in Burscough, Lancashire. Send us the details and our team will reply with a quote.
