Monitor Recycling and the Law
Computer monitors are electrical waste under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013. Businesses cannot put them in general waste or a skip, and they must be recycled at a licensed recycling facility.
Under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, your business has a duty of care for its waste. You must use authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for 2 years.

How do I dispose of old computer monitors?
Businesses should use a licensed waste carrier that recycles monitors under the WEEE Regulations. Monitors cannot go in general waste or a skip. National Recycling collects computer monitors in bulk from businesses and schools across the UK, recycles them at licensed recycling facilities and provides waste transfer notes.
Can computer monitors be recycled?
Yes. Monitors are recycled at licensed recycling facilities, where the glass, plastics, metals and circuit boards are separated and recovered. Anything that cannot be recycled is disposed of safely. Working and broken monitors can go through the same collection, alongside the rest of your old IT equipment.
Can I put monitors in a general waste bin or skip?
No. Computer monitors are electrical waste under the WEEE Regulations 2013, so businesses must keep them out of general waste and skips. Store them separately and arrange a collection with a licensed carrier, then keep the waste transfer notes for 2 years as part of your duty of care.
Do computer monitors store data?
No. Standard computer monitors do not store your files, so they do not usually need secure wiping. The computers and laptops they were connected to do. If you are clearing desks, add the PCs and laptops to the same collection and we can arrange secure data erasure or destruction for those devices.
Do you collect broken monitors?
Yes. We collect monitors that no longer work, including screens with cracked panels, dead pixels or failed power supplies. Broken monitors are still electrical waste under the WEEE Regulations, so they need the same compliant recycling as working ones. Tell us how many you have when you request a quote.
Is there a minimum number of monitors you collect?
Our service is designed for businesses and schools clearing monitors in bulk. Tell us how many monitors you have, along with any other IT equipment, and our team will reply with a quote and the collection options for your site.
