How HDPE Plastic Recycling Works

  1. 01

    Tell us what you have.

Use the quote form to give the type of HDPE, rough quantity, how it is stored and your collection postcode. A photo helps.
  2. 02

Our team replies with a quote providing clear pricing details.
  3. 03

    We collect.

A verified waste carrier from our haulage network collects on an agreed date. Bottles and smaller items are usually baled; large rigid items such as pipe and bins can be collected loose.
  4. 04

    Recycling.

At a licensed recycling facility, the HDPE is sorted, shredded, washed to remove labels and residue, then melted and pelletised. The recycled material goes into new pipe, bins, containers and plastic lumber.
  5. 05

    Paperwork.

You receive a waste transfer note for each collection.

Why Recycling HDPE Plastic Matters

HDPE is one of the most widely recycled plastics. Shredded, washed and melted into pellets, it becomes new pipe, bins, containers and plastic lumber, so recycling it saves raw material and keeps a durable plastic out of landfill and incineration. It works only when the material reaches a reprocessor clean and separate from other plastics, so keeping HDPE sorted on your site matters as much as the collection itself. Your business also has a duty of care for its waste: store it safely, pass it only to authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for at least 2 years.

HDPE Recycling FAQs

Ask our team
Is HDPE recyclable?

Yes. HDPE is one of the most widely recycled plastics. It can be shredded, washed, melted and remoulded several times, and recycled HDPE is in steady demand for pipe, bins, containers and plastic lumber. Keeping it clean and separate from other plastics gives it the best chance of being recycled.

What number is HDPE plastic?

HDPE is resin identification code 2. Look for a 2 inside the recycling triangle, often with the letters HDPE or PE-HD underneath. You will find it on milk and detergent bottles, drums, crates, bins and many other rigid containers. If an item is unmarked, send us a photo and we can help identify it.

How is HDPE plastic recycled?

HDPE is sorted from other plastics, shredded into flake and washed to remove labels, glue and residue. The clean flake is melted and formed into pellets. Manufacturers then use those pellets to make new HDPE products, including pipe, bins, crates, bottles and plastic lumber.

Can you recycle HDPE chemical drums?

Often, yes. Empty, rinsed drums that held non-hazardous products can usually be recycled with other HDPE. Drums that still contain or held hazardous chemicals may be classed as hazardous waste and need a different route. Tell us what each drum held, and send a safety data sheet if you have one.

Do you collect HDPE pipe offcuts?

Yes. We collect HDPE water, gas and utility pipe offcuts and end-of-reel waste from contractors, installers and manufacturers. Large pipe can be collected loose rather than baled. Keep it free of soil and other materials where you can, and tell us the rough diameters and quantity when you ask for a quote.

Can broken wheelie bins be recycled?

Yes. Most wheelie bins and large recycling bins are made from HDPE and recycle well. Remove the metal axle and lid pins where practical, empty the bins and keep them clean. We can collect them loose in bulk from councils, facilities teams and waste businesses across the UK.
