What Polypropylene We Collect

Polypropylene (PP) carries resin code 5. It is light, tough and resistant to chemicals and heat, so it is used in everything from food tubs to car parts.

Why Polypropylene Recycling Matters

Polypropylene is one of the most widely used plastics, yet much of it still ends up in general waste because it comes in so many forms. Collected separately, it recycles well into new containers, crates, furniture, automotive parts and packaging.

Under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, your business must store waste safely, use authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for at least 2 years. In England, Simpler Recycling has required workplaces with 10 or more employees to separate dry recyclables, including plastic, since 31 March 2025. Wales has had workplace recycling rules since 6 April 2024.

Polypropylene Recycling FAQs

Ask our team
Is polypropylene recyclable?

Yes. Polypropylene is a thermoplastic that can be washed, shredded, melted and made into new products. It is less often recycled than PET or HDPE because it comes in so many forms, so businesses get the best results by keeping PP separate and using a dedicated plastic collection.

What number is polypropylene?

Polypropylene is resin identification code 5. Look for a 5 inside the recycling triangle, often with PP underneath. You will find it on tubs, lids, caps, crates, tonne bags, car parts and many other moulded and woven products. If an item has no code, send us a photo and we can help identify it.

How is PP recycled?

PP is sorted from other plastics, washed to remove labels, adhesive and food residue, and shredded into flake or granules. The material is melted and formed into pellets of recycled resin. Depending on its quality, that resin is used for crates, containers, garden furniture, automotive parts and packaging.

Can polypropylene bags be recycled?

Yes. Woven PP sacks and tonne bags (FIBCs) can be recycled when they are empty, clean and sorted. Shake out any sand, aggregate or product, remove loose labels where you can, and keep them separate from general waste. Bundled or baled bags are easiest to collect in bulk.

Is Correx polypropylene?

Yes. Correx is a brand name for corrugated plastic sheet, which is usually made from polypropylene. It can be recycled with other PP once fixings, tape and stickers are removed where possible. See our Correx recycling service for signage, site protection and packaging dividers.

Is polypropylene food safe and BPA-free?

Polypropylene is widely used for food containers because it is considered food safe and does not contain BPA. That is why so much PP waste comes from food manufacturing, catering and retail packaging. Used food packaging should be emptied before collection so it can be recycled.
