Why LiFePO4 Batteries Need Proper Recycling
LiFePO4 batteries are more stable than many other lithium chemistries, but they are still lithium batteries. If they are damaged, crushed or short-circuited they can overheat, so they need careful storage and transport.
The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 say industrial and automotive batteries must not go to landfill or incineration. Under your duty of care, you must use authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for 2 years.

Can LiFePO4 batteries be recycled?
Yes. LiFePO4 batteries can be recycled at a licensed recycling facility, where they are sorted and useful materials are recovered. Businesses should arrange collection through a licensed waste carrier rather than putting them in general waste. Tell us the quantity and location and we will send you a quote.
How do I dispose of a LiFePO4 battery?
Dispose of a LiFePO4 battery through a licensed battery recycling service. Store it in a cool, dry place with the terminals covered, keep any damaged batteries apart, and use UN-approved packaging for transport. National Recycling arranges collection, recycling and the waste paperwork for businesses across the UK.
Is lithium iron phosphate the same as lithium-ion?
Lithium iron phosphate is one type of lithium-ion battery. It uses iron phosphate in its cathode, which makes it more thermally stable than many other lithium chemistries. It still needs to be stored, transported and recycled as a lithium battery, away from general waste.
Are LiFePO4 batteries a fire risk?
LiFePO4 batteries are lower risk than some lithium batteries, but they can still overheat if damaged, crushed or short-circuited. Cover the terminals, store them away from heat and flammable materials, and never put them in a general waste bin or compactor.
Will we get paperwork for the collection?
Yes. You receive a waste transfer note for each collection, or a consignment note where the waste needs one. These records show your business met its duty of care. Keep waste transfer notes for 2 years and consignment notes for 3 years.
