Why LiPo Batteries Need Careful Handling

Like all lithium batteries, LiPo batteries are a fire risk when damaged, crushed or short-circuited. Their soft casing makes them easier to puncture than hard-cased cells, so they must never go in general waste.

The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 say industrial and automotive batteries must not go to landfill or incineration. Your duty of care also means using authorised carriers and keeping waste transfer notes for 2 years.

LiPo Battery Recycling FAQs

Ask our team
How do you dispose of LiPo batteries?

Dispose of LiPo batteries through a licensed battery recycling service, never in general waste. Store them in a cool, dry place with the terminals covered, keep swollen packs apart, and use UN-approved packaging for transport. National Recycling arranges collection, recycling and waste paperwork for UK businesses.

Can lithium polymer batteries be recycled?

Yes. Lithium polymer batteries can be recycled at a licensed recycling facility, where they are sorted and useful materials are recovered. Businesses should use a licensed waste carrier to collect them. Send us the quantity and your postcode and our team will reply with a quote.

What should I do with a swollen LiPo battery?

Stop using a swollen LiPo battery straight away. Move it somewhere cool and away from flammable materials, and do not puncture, press or charge it. Keep it apart from other batteries and tell our team about it when you request a quote, so we can advise on packing.

What is the difference between LiPo and lithium-ion?

LiPo batteries are a type of lithium-ion battery that uses a polymer electrolyte and a soft pouch casing instead of a hard metal can. This makes them lighter and thinner, but easier to damage. Both types need specialist storage, transport and recycling.

Will we get paperwork for the collection?

Yes. You receive a waste transfer note for each collection, or a consignment note where the waste needs one. These records show your business met its duty of care. Keep waste transfer notes for 2 years and consignment notes for 3 years.
