Why Aerosol Disposal Needs Care
Aerosol cans are pressurised and often contain flammable propellant and product. If they are pierced, crushed or burned they can burst or catch fire, which is a risk to staff and to waste vehicles.
Cans that are not empty must be handled as hazardous waste by a licensed carrier. In England and Wales the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005 apply, and you must keep consignment notes for 3 years. Your duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 also means using authorised carriers and keeping waste transfer notes for 2 years.

How do businesses dispose of aerosol cans?
Keep used aerosols separate from other waste, store them upright in a cool, ventilated area and arrange collection through a licensed carrier. Cans that still contain product are hazardous waste. National Recycling collects aerosols from businesses across the UK and sends them to licensed recycling facilities.
Can you recycle aerosol cans?
Yes. Aerosol cans are made of metal that can be recycled once the can has been made safe. At a licensed recycling facility the cans are depressurised and separated into metal, propellant gas and residual contents. The metal is recycled and the other materials are recovered or disposed of safely.
Are aerosol cans hazardous waste?
Aerosol cans that still contain product or propellant must be handled as hazardous waste by a licensed carrier. Empty cans can be recycled for their metal. If you are not sure which you have, tell us when you request a quote and we will advise on the right collection.
Can I put aerosol cans in a general waste bin?
Businesses should not put aerosols that still contain product in general waste. Pressurised cans can burst or catch fire if they are crushed in a bin or waste vehicle. Keep them separate, label the container "Aerosol Waste" and arrange a licensed collection instead.
Is there a minimum quantity for aerosol disposal?
No fixed minimum applies. We collect from businesses that produce a few cans as well as those with large volumes. Tell us roughly how many aerosols you have and what they contained, and our team will reply with a quote and a collection date.
What paperwork will I receive?
You receive waste transfer documentation for every collection, and hazardous waste consignment notes where the cans still contain product. This gives you full traceability and shows you met your duty of care. Keep transfer notes for 2 years and consignment notes for 3 years in England and Wales.
