Why Used Antifreeze Is Hazardous Waste

Most vehicle antifreeze is based on ethylene glycol, which is toxic to people, pets and wildlife. Used antifreeze also picks up oil, fuel and metals from the engine. For these reasons, waste antifreeze is usually classed as hazardous waste.

In England and Wales, the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005 require you to keep hazardous waste separate, store it in approved, labelled containers and use licensed disposal services.

Your duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 also means you must stop waste escaping, so antifreeze must never be poured down a drain. Keep hazardous waste consignment notes for 3 years.

Antifreeze Disposal FAQs

Ask our team
How do you dispose of used antifreeze?

Drain used antifreeze into a sealed, labelled container and keep it separate from oil and other waste. Then arrange a collection with a licensed waste carrier, who will take it to a licensed site. National Recycling collects antifreeze from businesses across the UK and provides the paperwork.

Is antifreeze hazardous waste?

Usually, yes. Most vehicle antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, which is toxic, and used antifreeze often contains oil and metals from the engine. Waste antifreeze is normally classed as hazardous waste, so it needs a licensed carrier and a hazardous waste consignment note.

Can antifreeze go down the drain?

No. Antifreeze is toxic to people, animals and aquatic life, so it must never be poured down a drain, a sink or onto the ground. Doing so breaches your duty of care for business waste. Store it in a sealed container and book a collection instead.

Can I mix used antifreeze with waste oil?

It is best not to. Hazardous waste should be kept separate, and mixing antifreeze with oil can make both harder to recycle. Store antifreeze and oil in separate, clearly labelled containers. We can collect both at the same time if you have them.

What is the difference between antifreeze and coolant disposal?

Antifreeze is the glycol-based fluid used in vehicle cooling systems. Industrial coolants are the cutting and machining fluids used in engineering workshops. Both need specialist disposal, but they are different wastes and should be stored separately. Our coolant disposal page covers machining coolants and cutting fluids.

Do you collect antifreeze from garages?

Yes. We collect used antifreeze from garages, MOT centres, dealerships and fleet workshops across the UK, as one-off or regular collections. We can supply approved containers for storage between collections. Tell us how much you produce and our team will reply with a quote.
