How do I dispose of waste engine oil as a business?
Store used engine oil in sealed, labelled containers and have it collected by a licensed waste carrier. National Recycling collects waste engine oil from garages, fleet depots and workshops across the UK, sends it for recycling wherever possible, and gives you a hazardous waste consignment note for your records.
Is waste oil classed as hazardous waste?
Yes. Used mineral oils, such as engine, gear and hydraulic oils, are classed as hazardous waste. That means they must be collected by a licensed carrier, moved with a hazardous waste consignment note and taken to a licensed site. In England and Wales you keep the consignment note for three years.
Can used oil be recycled?
Yes, much used oil can be recycled. It can be cleaned and reprocessed for further use, which is why it should be kept separate from water, fuel and solvents. We send waste oil to licensed recycling facilities wherever possible and only dispose of oil that cannot be recycled safely.
Can I pour used oil down the drain?
No. Pouring oil down drains, onto the ground or into general waste is illegal and can pollute rivers and groundwater. Businesses must store waste oil safely and pass it to an authorised carrier. We collect waste oil from your site and handle the paperwork for you.
Do you offer regular waste oil collections?
Yes. We offer both regular and one-off waste oil collections across the UK. Workshops and fleet depots that produce oil every week often choose a regular schedule, while sites clearing out old stock can book a single collection. Tell us your volumes and we will reply with a quote.
What paperwork do I get for used oil disposal?
You receive a hazardous waste consignment note for each waste oil collection. It records the type and quantity of oil, who produced it, who carried it and where it went. Keep it for three years in England and Wales so you can show you met your duty of care.
