Why Contaminated Fuel Disposal Needs a Specialist
Petrol is highly flammable and gives off vapour at normal temperatures, and diesel can still burn and pollute. Waste fuel is classed as hazardous waste. It must never go down drains, onto the ground or into general waste.
Hazardous waste is covered by the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005, the Special Waste Regulations in Scotland and the Hazardous Waste Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2005. Each movement of hazardous waste needs a consignment note, and in England and Wales you must keep consignment notes for three years.
Your business also has a duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. You must store waste safely, pass it only to authorised carriers and keep a record of every transfer.
Store waste fuel in sealed, approved containers in a ventilated area away from ignition sources and drains, and label each container clearly. Do not mix petrol and diesel with each other or with other waste.

How does petrol disposal work for businesses?
Petrol disposal starts with storing old petrol in a sealed, approved container, then having it collected by a licensed waste carrier. Never pour it down a drain, onto the ground or into general waste, as it is highly flammable and a pollutant. We collect old petrol from businesses and provide a hazardous waste consignment note.
How do I dispose of contaminated diesel?
Contaminated diesel, for example diesel mixed with water or dirt, should be drained into sealed containers and collected by a licensed carrier. It is classed as hazardous waste, so it needs a consignment note. Tell us how much you have and how it is stored, and we will reply with a quote.
Is waste fuel classed as hazardous waste?
Yes. Waste petrol and diesel are classed as hazardous waste because they are flammable and harmful to the environment. They must be collected by a licensed carrier, moved with a hazardous waste consignment note and taken to a licensed site. Keep the consignment note for three years in England and Wales.
What should I do with wrong fuel drained from a vehicle?
Fuel drained from a misfuelled vehicle is a mix of petrol and diesel, and it is classed as hazardous waste. Keep it in sealed, labelled containers away from ignition sources and arrange a licensed collection. Garages and recovery firms can book regular or one-off collections with us.
How should I store waste fuel before collection?
Store waste fuel in sealed, approved containers in a well-ventilated area, away from heat, sparks and drains. Label each container with its contents and keep petrol and diesel separate. Use a drip tray or bund where possible, and keep quantities as low as you can until collection.
Do you collect fuel nationwide?
Yes. We collect waste fuel from businesses across the UK through our network of haulage partners, from single garages to multi-site fleet operators. Collections can be one-off or regular, and every collection comes with the hazardous waste paperwork you need.
