Why Liquid Waste Requires Professional Disposal

Most waste liquids, including chemicals, oils, solvents, paint and fuel, are classed as hazardous, so they cannot be poured down the drain, left in general waste or kept in unlabelled containers. Down the drain they pollute watercourses and damage drainage systems, and on the ground they contaminate soil and groundwater, which is why they must be collected by a licensed carrier and taken to a licensed recycling or disposal site. Different liquids also have to be kept separate until collection, in sealed, approved containers, with a consignment note or waste transfer note recording every load. Professional disposal keeps those steps handled for you, so your liquids are recovered wherever it is safe and your business has the paperwork to prove where the rest went.

Liquid Waste Disposal FAQs

Ask our team
How do businesses dispose of liquid waste?

Businesses must use a licensed waste carrier to collect liquid waste and take it to a licensed site. Store the liquid in sealed, labelled containers, keep different liquids separate and get the right paperwork for each collection. National Recycling arranges the collection, recycling or disposal and the paperwork for you.

Can I pour liquid waste down the drain?

No, not without permission from your water company. Chemicals, oils, solvents, fuel and similar liquids can pollute watercourses and damage drainage systems. Pouring them away also breaches your duty of care for business waste. Store them safely and book a collection with a licensed waste carrier instead.

Is liquid waste classed as hazardous?

It depends on what the liquid is. Liquids that are toxic, flammable, corrosive or reactive, such as many chemicals, oils and solvents, are classed as hazardous waste. Some water-based liquids are not. If you are unsure, tell us what you have and we will help you identify it.

What containers do I need for liquid waste collection?

Liquid waste should be stored in sealed, leak-proof containers that suit the substance, such as drums, cans or IBCs, and labelled clearly. Keep incompatible liquids apart. If you do not have suitable containers, we can supply approved containers for safe storage until collection.

Do you collect small quantities of liquid waste?

Yes. We collect small and large volumes of liquid waste from businesses, schools and other organisations, either as a one-off collection or on a regular schedule. Tell us the type of liquid and roughly how much you have, and our team will reply with a quote.

What paperwork will I get for liquid waste disposal?

You will receive a hazardous waste consignment note for hazardous liquids, or a waste transfer note for non-hazardous waste. These records show your waste was handled legally. Keep consignment notes for 3 years and waste transfer notes for 2 years in England and Wales.
