What Is COSHH Waste?
COSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. These rules cover substances that can harm people at work, such as chemicals, fumes, solvents and some cleaning products.
When those substances are used up, out of date or no longer needed, they become COSHH waste. Most COSHH waste is also classed as hazardous waste, so it needs a licensed collection and the right paperwork.

COSHH Waste and the Law
COSHH rules require you to control hazardous substances while they are on your site. Once they become waste, hazardous waste law and your duty of care apply as well.
Hazardous waste is covered by the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005, the Special Waste Regulations in Scotland and the Hazardous Waste Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2005. Each movement of hazardous waste needs a consignment note, and in England and Wales you must keep consignment notes for three years.
Your business also has a duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. You must store waste safely, pass it only to authorised carriers and keep a record of every transfer.

What is COSHH waste?
COSHH waste is any substance covered by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations that your business no longer needs. Examples include used chemicals, solvents, oils, paint and the containers they came in. Most COSHH waste is classed as hazardous waste and needs a licensed collection.
What is a COSHH bin?
A COSHH bin is a container for storing hazardous substances or hazardous waste safely at work. It keeps the waste contained, labelled and separate from general waste until it is collected. We can supply COSHH bins as part of our hazardous waste collection service.
Do you supply COSHH bins?
Yes. We can supply approved containers for hazardous waste storage, including COSHH bins. Tell us what substances you produce and roughly how much, and our team will reply with a quote for the right containers and collections for your site.
How do you dispose of COSHH waste?
COSHH waste should be stored in labelled, sealed containers and collected by a licensed waste carrier, never put in general waste or poured down drains. We collect it from your site, send it to licensed recycling facilities or licensed disposal sites, and give you a hazardous waste consignment note.
Is COSHH waste the same as hazardous waste?
Not always, but most COSHH waste is classed as hazardous waste. COSHH rules cover how you control harmful substances at work, while hazardous waste rules cover how you store, move and dispose of them. If a substance has hazard labels, assume it needs a hazardous waste collection.
What paperwork do I need for COSHH waste disposal?
Hazardous COSHH waste needs a consignment note for each collection, which we provide. It records what the waste is, who produced it, who carried it and where it went. In England and Wales you must keep consignment notes for three years.
