  3. 03

    We collect.

A verified waste carrier from our haulage network collects from your site on an agreed date, as a one-off clearance or a regular collection.

    Recycling.

At a licensed recycling facility, the acrylic is sorted by type and colour, checked for contamination and shredded. It can then be heated to break it back down into its building block, methyl methacrylate, which is purified and used to make new acrylic.
  5. 05

    Paperwork.

You receive a waste transfer note for every collection.

Why PMMA Recycling Matters

Acrylic is durable and weather resistant, which is why it lasts so long in signs and glazing. The same qualities mean it does not break down in landfill. Unlike many plastics, PMMA can be returned to its original monomer and remade with little loss of quality, so recycling it makes good use of a valuable material.

Acrylic is not accepted in most general mixed recycling, so it needs a specialist route. Under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, your business must store waste safely, pass it only to authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for at least 2 years. In England, Simpler Recycling has required workplaces with 10 or more employees to separate dry recyclables, including plastic, since 31 March 2025.

Acrylic and Perspex Recycling FAQs

Ask our team
Can acrylic be recycled?

Yes. Acrylic (PMMA) is one of the few plastics that can be broken back down into its original monomer and made into new acrylic of similar quality. It is not usually accepted in household or general mixed recycling, so businesses need a specialist collection that keeps it separate.

Is Perspex recyclable?

Yes. Perspex is a brand name for acrylic sheet, so it is recycled in the same way as other PMMA. Offcuts, old signs, displays and screens can all be collected. Keep Perspex apart from polycarbonate and other clear plastics, as they look similar but need different recycling routes.

How is PMMA recycled?

PMMA is sorted by type and colour, checked for contamination and shredded. The most common route then heats it so the polymer breaks down into methyl methacrylate, its liquid building block. That monomer is purified and used to make new acrylic sheet and products.

How can I tell acrylic from polycarbonate?

Acrylic tends to be clearer and more rigid, and it cracks or shatters under a sharp blow. Polycarbonate is slightly more flexible and very hard to break. Edges and labels can also help. If you are not sure, send us a photo of the sheet and any markings.

Do I need to remove the protective film?
Can you collect old Covid screens?

Yes. Many offices, shops and restaurants still have acrylic counter screens and desk dividers in storage. We can collect them in bulk from one site or several, and send them for recycling rather than landfill. Tell us roughly how many screens you have and where they are.
