ABS Waste Products That We Collect

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a tough, rigid plastic that falls under resin code 7, "other". It is used wherever a part needs to take knocks and hold its shape.

We also collect PC-ABS blends. Keep them separate from pure ABS, as reprocessors handle them differently.

    We collect.

A verified waste carrier from our haulage network collects on a date that suits you, as a one-off or on a regular schedule.
  4. 04

    Recycling.

At a licensed recycling facility, the ABS is sorted from other plastics, shredded into flake, cleaned of labels and dirt, then melted and formed into pellets for new ABS products.
  5. 05

    Paperwork.

You receive a waste transfer note for each collection.

Why ABS Recycling Matters

ABS does not break down in landfill, yet it can be reground and remoulded, so sending it to general waste throws away a usable material. Clean, single-grade ABS from a production line is among the most straightforward plastics to recycle.

Your business also has a legal duty of care for its waste under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. You must store it safely, use authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for at least 2 years. In England, workplaces with 10 or more employees have had to separate dry recyclables, including plastic, since 31 March 2025 under Simpler Recycling.

If your ABS is part of electrical equipment that is still assembled, it is WEEE and must be recycled under the WEEE Regulations 2013 through our electronic waste recycling service.

A little clarity

ABS Recycling FAQs

Ask our team
Is ABS plastic recyclable?

Yes. ABS is a thermoplastic, so it can be melted and remoulded. It is not usually accepted in household or general mixed recycling because it carries resin code 7, so businesses need a specialist collection that keeps ABS separate and sends it to a reprocessor that handles it.

How is ABS recycled?

ABS is sorted from other plastics, shredded into flake and cleaned to remove labels, adhesives and dirt. The clean flake is then melted and formed into pellets. Manufacturers use those pellets to mould new ABS parts, often blended with new material depending on the grade needed.

What recycling code is ABS?

ABS falls under resin identification code 7, which means "other plastics". Code 7 covers many different polymers, including polycarbonate, acrylic and nylon, so the number alone does not tell a reprocessor what the material is. Moulded parts are often also stamped with the letters ABS, which helps with sorting.

Can I recycle ABS 3D printing waste?

Yes. Failed prints, support material and leftover ABS filament can be recycled as long as they are kept apart from PLA and other filament types. Bag or box them separately and tell us roughly how much you have, and we can add them to an ABS collection.

Can you collect ABS mixed with other plastics?

We can collect ABS on the same vehicle as other plastics and waste types, but it should be kept in its own bags, bales or boxes. Mixed polymers are much harder to recycle, so separating ABS at source gives it the best chance of being made into new products.

What is ABS plastic used for?

ABS is used where a part needs to be tough, rigid and impact resistant. Common uses include appliance and equipment housings, automotive trims and dashboards, pipe and fittings, protective gear, luggage, toys and 3D printing filament. That means ABS waste comes mainly from manufacturing, automotive and electronics businesses.
