Alkaline Batteries We Collect

Why Alkaline Battery Recycling Matters

Alkaline batteries contain metals such as zinc, manganese and steel that can be recovered and used again. When they go to landfill, those materials are lost. Used batteries in general waste can also short-circuit if their terminals touch, especially 9V batteries.

Every business has a duty of care for its waste under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. You must pass waste only to authorised carriers and keep waste transfer notes for 2 years. The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 also set rules for how waste batteries are collected and recycled in the UK.

Alkaline Battery Recycling FAQs

Ask our team
Can alkaline batteries be recycled?

Yes. Alkaline batteries can be recycled at a licensed recycling facility, where zinc, manganese and steel are recovered for reuse. Businesses should collect them in a dedicated battery bin and arrange collection through a licensed waste carrier. National Recycling collects alkaline batteries from businesses across the UK.

How do businesses dispose of alkaline batteries?

Businesses should keep alkaline batteries out of general waste and store them in a dedicated battery bin. When the bin is full, a licensed waste carrier collects the batteries for recycling and you receive a waste transfer note. We can supply the bin and arrange regular collections.

Can alkaline batteries go in the general waste bin?

Businesses should not put alkaline batteries in general waste. Recycling recovers useful metals, and loose batteries can short-circuit if their terminals touch. Your duty of care also means using an authorised carrier and keeping records, which a dedicated battery collection gives you.

Do you supply battery bins?

Yes. We supply UN-approved battery bins and drums in a range of sizes. Fill your bin with used batteries, and when it is full we collect it, recycle the contents and replace it with an empty one. Tell us your expected volume when you ask for a quote.

Can you collect alkaline batteries with other battery types?

Yes. We collect lithium, lead acid, NiMH, alkaline and other battery types. Tell us what you have when you request a quote. Lithium batteries need extra care because they are a fire risk, so we will advise on how to separate and pack them.

Will we get paperwork for our battery collection?

Yes. You receive a waste transfer note for each collection. It shows your business passed its waste to an authorised carrier and met its duty of care. Keep waste transfer notes for at least 2 years in case you are asked to show them.
