How Are Vapes Recycled?

Disposable vapes and e-cigarettes contain a mix of materials including lithium batteries, plastics, and metals. Because these components require different treatment processes, responsible recycling begins with carefully dismantling each device so the materials can be separated and recovered safely.

Battery Removal and Isolation

The lithium-ion battery is removed from the vape as early as possible. Many recycling processes prioritise this step before full dismantling because batteries must be isolated and stored safely to prevent fires or short circuits during handling and transport.

Dismantling The Device

Once the battery has been removed, the remaining vape unit can be dismantled. This involves separating the casing, mouthpiece, internal electronics, and other components.

Battery Material Recovery

The separated batteries are sent to specialist recycling facilities where materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper are recovered for reuse in new battery production and other technologies.

Separating Plastics and Metals

The remaining vape components are sorted into plastics, metals, and electronic materials so they can be processed through the appropriate recycling streams.

Vape Disposal Regulations And Compliance

Under UK law, vapes and e-cigarettes are classified as electrical waste (WEEE) because they contain circuit boards, wiring, and batteries. In addition, many disposable vapes include hazardous materials, such as lithium and residual nicotine, which must not be disposed of in general waste.

Businesses that sell, distribute, or manage vape products have a legal duty of care to ensure all waste is collected, transported, and processed by authorised waste carriers. Failure to comply with regulations or Environmental Protection Act 1990 can result in penalties, environmental harm, and reputational damage. With new vape take-back schemes in place and the single use vape ban from June 2025, protecting the environment from these products has become prevalent.

Our vape recycling solutions help businesses meet all these obligations, ensuring every device is recycled safely.
